Which face mask
for which purpose?
Types of transmissions
• Air-borne transmission involving fine particles (droplet nuclei, dust).
• Droplet transmission involving saliva droplets or secretions from the upper airway.
Surgical mask
lntended to prevent the projection of saliva droplets or secretions from the upper
airway of the person wearing the mask.
For whom are they intended?
• Health-care staff (physicians and nurses) : to protect patients and avoid
contaminating the operating area and sterile equipment,
• contagious patients: to protect their family and environment,
• families and visitors who come into contact with patients.
If the mask includes an anti-splash layer (type IIR or IR surgical masks), it protects
the wearer against the risks of projected biological fluids. Such masks are often
fitted with a visor to protect the eyes.
This is the most suitable type of mask for surgeons.
Characteristics and requirements
• CE marking.
• Standard EN 14683: 2005.
• BFE = Bacterial Filtration Efficiency.
• Classification:Types I and II depending on the BFE.
• Pressure difference ΔP = ability of the mask to prevent air flow.
• Resistance to the projection of fluids = for R types only.
The most frequently used types are types I (BFE≥ 95%) and II (BFE≥ 98%).
An R indicates that the mask is splash-resistant.
The differential pressure describes the resistance of the mask to gaseous flows. IR and
IIR type masks are said to be “splash-resistant”.
